The first go around wasnt a slam dunk, but it was a lot better than the plan currently on the table.

I attended a couple meetings over the past couple months and asked why the light rail was removed, and they state simply that its a capex decision. There simply isnt enough in the "transit side" to build more rail. Not withstanding, there is money in this plan to remove the freight lines that run through downtown to an older "belt" that skirts downtown.

The frustrating part, is that the planners havent diverted any of the "road money" in the long range plan into the transit side. All road money stays in the budget and transit will have to support itself with a tax. heard that one before? yeah us too. If even $20 million a year could be diverted away from the roads to the transit, at least one leg of the light rail could be constructed.

As it stands, the best hope is for public sentiment to influence the politicians to update the plan, as often happens.

A report was released in September from our MPO studying the freight lines, and it included a picture of where light rail might go in the future, and it DOES follow the yellow line you drew. Unfortunately, its so far in the future, it cannot even be constrained in the 25 year plan...

Again though, great post.Curthttp://www.urbanindy.comnoreply@blogger.com
