Batman Begins
Bruce Wayne: Did you build this train, Dad?
Thomas Wayne: Gotham's been good to our family, but the city's been suffering. People less fortunate than us have been enduring very hard times. So we built a new, cheap, public transportation system to unite the city. And at the center...Wayne Tower.
Bruce Wayne: Is that where you work?
Thomas Wayne: No, I work at the hospital. I leave the running of our company to much better men.
Bruce Wayne: Better?
Thomas Wayne: Well...more interested men.

So Gotham's mass transit was built with private money...
I wonder why companies will spend for toll roads but not rails?
Chicago's El system was built, as far as I understand it, with private money, at least for the original elevated parts. The subways came later, and were government projects. And that's why public funding is needed for infrastructure.
i think it's interesting that batman begins was in a cgi fake gotham, but dark knight was a mix of nyc & chicago
@ Brian: What are you talking about? Batman Begins as well as TDK are both almost 100% Chicago, shot IN Chicago. There's some CGI such as a few aerials and the Narrows but even with the CGI clearly Chicago landmarks, architecture, and bridges can be seen.
@ arcady: I believe the Met, Lake Street L, and South Side Elevated were all privately built (and operated?), and later consolidated and publicly operated when the CTA was formed.
