Transit Accessible Drinking

I wonder if on the DC cocktail circuit there is more drunk driving?
Neither of us seem to be on the Georgetown cocktail party circuit, but we’re both on the Green Line accessible beer ‘n Beam circuit.

  1. Compare America to Europe. Drunk driving is so much rarer there, because you never need to drive to get to a drink.

  2. Right, the problem isn't the drunk part, it's the driving. So lets bring back neighborhood taverns in walkable neighborhoods.

  3. Homer Simpson sometimes walks to Moe's, but other times, he may be driving.

  4. Those on the legendary (in more than one sense of the word) Georgetown cocktail party circuit, insofar as it actually exists, are middle-aged and up and get around exclusively by private car. The physical Georgetown neighborhood is notoriously not served by rail transit, and probably most "Georgetown" coctail parties are actually held in even more remote suburban venues.

Meanwhile a string of Washington city neighborhoods along the Metrorail system's Green Line, in the ten years since it was finished and especially in the five or so years that the subway's been kept open until 3 AM on Fridays and Saturdays rather than closing at midnight as on other nights, have developed a very active bar scene (in particular) which appeals to a much younger-trending crowd than the cocktail parties.

In other words, this IS transit accessible drinking, maybe the first time it's been significantly available in DC since the demise of the old streetcar system.

  5. F.Y.I., one of my favourite Simpsons episodes, "Duffless", concerns Homer being arrested for drunk driving. And wish me a Happy Birthday this Wednesday - I'm 22 years old. It's Canada Day.
